< | <center>The graph below illustrates an interesting pattern in the evolution of Ireland's population. From this graph it is evident that Ireland began to experience a steep population incline during the mid-1700's that peaked in the 1840's. From 1750 to 1845, Ireland's population more than quadrupled to over eight million. However, this unprecedented rate of growth took a dramatic downturn in the middle of the nineteenth century when the Great Potato Famine devastated the country. In the century procedding the Famine, Ireland experienced a reversal of its high growth levels as population receded by almost half. The pupose of this website is to explore the causes of such depopulation and to show that the decline in Irish population can be attributed to many factors other than Famine related emigration. </center> | ||
