<center>The graph below illustrates an interesting pattern in the evolution of Ireland's population.  From this graph it is evident that Ireland experienced a steep incline in population during the middle of the 1700's, which peaked in the 1840's.  During this time Ireland's population more than quadrupled to over eight million. However, this unprecedented growth took a dramatic downturn in the mid-nineteenth century that effectively reversed the rates of population achieved in the prior century, causing Irish population to recede by almost half. The pupose of this website is to explain the causes of Irish depopulation, which is an occurance that remains a significant aspect of Ireland's past. </center>
