Back to Protest Music

Suffrage Struggle & Womens Liberation

Many of the earliest feminist protest songs were geared toward granting women the right to vote and equal civil rights for men and women. The song "Let Us Speak Our Minds" was one of the most popular songs of this time. Its powerful and straightforward feminist message provided additional strength and courage for male female activists. Other songs described the nation as an extended family. “Earlier women had asked for the vote on the basis of their humanity; now they demanded it on the basis of their maternity”(Rodnitzky, 1974, p.508). An example of this can be seen in the song "Give the Ballot to the Mothers".

  • Elizabeth Knight:Songs of the Suffragetts

Both "Let Us Speak Our Minds" and "Give the Ballot to the Mothers" are included in the recording entittled Elizabeth Knight:Songs of the Suffragetts. An audio recording of the album is provided in the link below:

Transcending Gender Roles

With the modern invention of television, musicians have been able to add additional elements to their music composition. They are able to manipulate visual symbols to provide additional meanings to their songs. Artists are able to create a single song with multiple interpretations; this allows them to create non-normative sexual identities.
