We will be running an intermediate climbing trip to the New River Gorge in southeastern West Virginia on the first weekend of October. The New is only about 5 hours from campus, and features thousands of the east coast's premier sport and toproping routes. We will leave on Friday afternoon, camp out near Fayetteville, WV, and climb on Saturday and Sunday morning, getting back to campus in time to complete work. We had an adventure to top all of the other trips this year. As Drew put it, everything went "swimmingly". We left at 3:30 on Friday, stopping along the way to eat delicous Amy's Thai takeout. We set up camp at Roger's Mountaintop Retreat, a favorite of climbers, near the Kaymoor area of the New. After a nighttime exploration of 'The Hole', a massive sport cave with a 40- foot 5.13 roof, we hit the sack in preparation for Saturday's climbing. We got up early and went to WaterStone, the preeminent outfitter in Fayetteville. After procuring a guidebook and some Subway subs, we headed across the bridge to the Junkyard area, where topropes were quickly established by Duncan and Adrian. The first two climbs were Four Sheets to the Wind, 5.9+, and New River Gunks, 5.7, both classic routes. Everyone successfully climbed the .7 and the .9+ was a fun but tiring challenge for everyone; only Drew and Adrian managed to send it. We set a 5.6 that received mixed reviews from those who tried it, and set up The Entertainer, 5.10a, which was also conquered by Drew and Adrian. Meanwhile, Katie taught Cam and Dan the intricacies of belay technique and several others went to explore a sweet bouldering cave. Near the end of the afternoon, Cam and Drew removed the anchors while everyone tried their hand at rapping Four Sheets to the Wind, which involved lowering over a sweet overhang and down through the air. Satisfied, we went to the market and bought ingredients for a delicious shish kabob dinner cooked over the fire. After s'mores, we challenged another group of climbers to compete with us in performing several Feats of Strength. After another exploration of The Hole, we went to bed. On Sunday, we journeyed to Summersville Lake after again stopping at the outfitters for new shoes and webbing. On the cliffs above the water, Drew and Adrian enjoyed a 5.7 sport lead which everyone else toproped. Pressed for time, we were forced to leave at around 3:00, but vowed to return.
