Howard Edwards Gansworth was a Tuscarora Native American, born April 12, 1876 on an Indian Reservation in New York. He attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School and Dickinson Preparatory School in 1896. In 1901 he attended Princeton University and then returned to Carlisle in 1903 to become an assistant disciplinarian at the Carlisle Indian School. He took an active role at the School and spoke highly about the promotion of Native American education and ways to improve the system. Gansworth proved to be very successful while studying in Carlisle as well in his future endeavors.
