La Raza Unida Party is an example of a third political party in the United States. It is interesting to note that this party was the first third party in the United States to be formed by an ethnic group. La Raza Unida Party was originally influenced by several aspects of the Chicano movement in the 1960’s. Concerns of land grants, farmers’ workers rights, education, and police brutally lead to the eventual formation of the party. By 1970, La Raza Unida Party was established by activists in Texas; these individuals were just simply disgusted by the traditional two party system (Navarro 21).
