Mission Statement
The Sisterhood is an organization that is founded upon the principles of unity and diversity amongst women of different races, ethnicities, socioeconomic backgrounds, nationalities, sexual orientation and religions. Recognizing that differences amongst women are valuable, we use these differences to foster individual awareness within the context of a family. Building upon this foundation, we raise cultural and gender consciousness within the Dickinson and Carlisle communities.
Events
There are several events held each semester to promote thier purpose. Several open meetings are also held for members and curious onlookers to come and be apart of. quilt project for International Women's Day
Their important events consist of quilt projects for International Women's Day, The Sisterhood annual fashion show that is open to everyone. There are several dance party often with themes so the campus can participate. 2,3
They have worked with Spectrum, Umoja, Pi Phi and other organization to hold events and support one another.3
Effectiveness
The Sisterhoold has approximatly 20 members active. Ms. Lawerence, an active member of the Sisterhood rates the group to be a 3 (on a 1 to 5 scale, 5 being the most) when it comes to effectiveness. However, Alexander describes the organization as "women enjoying the company of women" and as a means of "promoting but also being a true enforcer of diversity. " 2,3 Based on their publicity through the Dickinsonian, they seem to be more than just a 3, as they clearly are enforcers of racial diversity and gender awareness.
Problems/Dilemmas
The sisterhood faces many financial problems as they are not funded by senate because of the all female component. They find it hard to publicize their events and frequently find that the Dickinson College students, as a whole, are not particularly receptive to their organization.
Another problem they face is that many people think of the sisterhood as only a minority organization because of the title and its stereotypical meanings tied to it (often associated with black women the word :sister). However, they are a group for women to unite from all races, backgrounds, and beliefs.
