| Bologna was originally an ancient Iberian-Liguarian settlement which became an Etruscan town in the 6th century BC called Velzna (Felsina in Latin). Following various dominations during the Middle Ages, in 1000 this region became a free Commune. The renowned University of Bologna was founded in 1088 and soon Bologna was attracting students and visitors alike from all over the world. Not only is it Europe’s first university, but it is where the rebirth of Roman law was declared.

| Bologna is located 94 miles (151km) south-west of Venice and 234 miles (370km) north of Rome. Italy consists of many regions, Bologna is the capital of the Emilia Romagna. Bologna is known for its delicious food and cultural landmarks and is often overlooked by tourists. Bologna is known by three well-known nicknames. It is often referred to as “La Rossa” (The Red) because it was the first city in Italy to elect a Communist town council and red-colored bricks. “La Dotta” (The Learned) as Europe’s first university was established here and “La Grassa” (The Fat) for it’s rich food. There are many historical sites and landmarks in Bologna includiung The University of Bologna, The Two Towers and the Basilica of San Petronino.
