Resetting Network Passwords

1. Start > Settings > Control Panel > Administrative Tools > Active Directory Users and Computers 2. FAS.LCL > FAS > Students > Users 3. Message may appear the first time reading "2000 of approximately 2000 items in the Users folder were retrieved. From the View menu, select Filter Options to change the query parameters or increase the maximum number of items displayed per folder." 4. Set it to something high, like 4000. 5. Now that you're viewing FAS.LCL > FAS > Students > Users with all the users displayed, you can do one of two things:

Unlock a Network Account

...when the user knows what the password is and doesn't want to change it. 1. Double-click on the username. 2. Select the "Account" tab. 3. In the "Account Options" section, scroll down until you see the "Account is Disabled" line. (It should be checked if the account is locked.) 4. Uncheck the box, then click on OK.

Reset a Network Password

...when the user doesn't know what the password is. 1. Right-click on the username. 2. Choose "Reset Password..." 3. Type in a temporary password. Typically it's Password#1, but you can use anything as long as it follows the rule (UPPERCASE-lowercase-number-symbol). 4. Check the "User must change password..." box. 5. Click on OK. 6. Tell the user what the new temporary password is (write it down for them if necessary), and give them the standard spiel: "The next time you log in, you'll have to change it right away. Be sure to use an uppercase, a lower case, a number, and a symbol, and you cannot re-use a password." And try to convince them to do it right away, since they're in the microroom already.  :-)
