The University of Bologna was begun by Giosuè Carducci and a group of historians in 1088.In 1158 Federico I wrote the Constitutio Habita which legally made the University a "...place where research could develop independently from any other power". Subsequently in the 14th Century, self-proclaimed "artists" who were scholars ranging from Astronomy and Medicine to Rhetoric and Philosophy collaborated with the school of jurists. Famous scholars such as Dante Alighieri and Cino da Pistoria studied at this revered institution. In the 15th century other subjects such as Greek and Hebrew studies, "natural magic" and Theology were added. An important figure of this time was Ulisse Aldrovandi who contributed a great deal to the study of natural sciences and animals. The 16th and 17th centuries began the golden age of Medicine in Bologna with the collaboration of plastic surgery pioneer Gaspare Tagliacozzi and anatomical researcher Marcello Malpighi. Famous students and scholars began to flock to the University including Albrecht Dürer, Leon Battista Alberti and St. Carlo Borromeo. The 18th Century Industrial Revolution brought an increased interest in science and technological development including electrotechnical great Benjamin Franklin. A prosperous and flourishing era followed the establishment of the United Italian State. Figures of this time include Giovanni Pascoli, Federigo Enriques and Giacomo Ciamician. The University celebrated its eighth centennial with a convention of international institutions. They honored the great place of study for its revolutionary ideas and tolerance. The University of Bologna was able to stay popular until the period between World War One and World War Two where other countries besides Bologna were increasing their research and studies. In order to stay successful, the University forged relationships with international countries and is now why many students from other countries flock to the University of Bologna to study.
