William J. Gardner
William J. Gardner is another successful Native American who attended the Carlisle Indian Industrial School and graduated from the Dickinson School of Law. While attending the Industrial School he played as a fullback on the Indian Football team, pitched for the baseball team and played center on the basketball team. Although he did not attend Dickinson College, he did graduate from the Dickinson Law School. Shortly after, he played minor league baseball and practiced law in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1909 he became the coach of the DuPont Manual Training School within the same city and re-elected as physical director for the upcoming year. The following year, Gardner returned to the Carlisle Indian School to assist “Pop” Warner in training the football team.
