Overview
Website created by: Karen Phelps
The graph below illustrates an interesting pattern in the evolution of Ireland's population. From this graph it is evident that Ireland began to experience a steep population incline during the mid-1700's, which peaked in the 1840's. From 1750 to 1845, Ireland's population more than quadrupled to over eight million. However, this unprecedented rate of growth took a dramatic downturn in the middle of the nineteenth century that effectively reversed the high levels of population, causing Irish population to recede by almost half. The pupose of this website is to explore the causes of Irish depopulation and to show that the decline in population can be attributed to many factors other than Famine related emigration.
