The "Celtic Tiger": Ireland's Journey to Economic Modernity
"The name "Celtic Tiger" emerged because Ireland's rates of growth in recent years have been sustained at levels close to those of the four Asian Tigers-South Korea, Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Singapore."- Paul Sweeny
Ireland became independent in 1922. Their economic performance before and after their independence from U.K was notable in what it didn't accomplish.Along with this Ireland xperienced a century of stagnation in their population size-the 1981 population size was
the same as their 1881 size. The reason was the not-so-good economic circumstances that the Irish working population confronted which led to the increase in net emigration to economies with better economic circumstances.
Ireland in 1921, 1961, and even in 1981 remained still a traditional, agricultural economy characterized by low level technology with a growing but still incipent industrial sector.
Since independence Ireland took three independent strategies. Each one was created after the previous one failed. . These were: 1)Comparative advantage, 2)economic autarky, and i3)ndustrialization-by-invitation.
