The Environmental Justice Program of the United States Conference of Catholic Bishops began in 1993, and focuses on scholarship, leadership development, public policy, and special projects. The organization is distinctively Catholic as its "foundation lies in Pope John Paul II's 1990 World Day of Peace message and the United States Catholic bishops' statement in 1991, Renewing the Earth" NCCBUSCC.

"The USCCB is an assembly of the Catholic Church hierarchy who work together to unify, coordinate, promote, and carry on Catholic activities in the United States; to organize and conduct religious, charitable, and social welfare work at home and abroad; to aid in education; and to care for immigrants."
