The AFSC strongly believes that each person is free to a life of full expression and freedom. This belief is the main reason for the AFSC strong support of lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transgender people. Four regional programs focus specifically on LGBT constituencies and concerns: Seattle's Gay, Lesbian, Bisexual, Transgender, and Questioning (GLBTQ) Youth Program; Portland, Oregon's Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual Program; Ann Arbor's Lesbian/Gay/Bisexual/Transgender Issues Program; and Honolulu's Hawai'i Gay Liberation Program. The AFSC began funding the Seattle and Oregon programs in 1986 believing that thry must attack the problem on the state level. The Honolulu program was created in 1997 in response to divisions and tensions over LGBT marriage equality, the program attempts to link this struggle with native Hawaians struggle for human rights. The AFSC believes in placing the LGBT issue within the context if international human rights linking the anti war movement with LGBT issues.
