The Advocate: The Only National Gay and Lesbian Newsmagine

The Advocate is a bi-weekly national gay and lesbian news magazine. It was first published in Los Angeles in 1967. Originally called the Los Angeles Advocate it contained articles on the gay liberation movement as well as lifestyle pieces about movie starts and male fashion. In 1969, The Advocate started its national distribution. Since 1983, the newsmagazine has continually reported on the AIDS epidemic and political issues affecting the gay community. In addition to covering these issues, today The Advocate contains a wide variety of articles from politics to entertainment reviews. The Advocate is currently the only nationally distributed gay and lesbian new publication (Wikholm).
