Scholars argue that the government's attempts to discourage urban crowding by promoting home ownership outside the cities (by imposing taxes such as the federal gasoline tax for highway construction which resulted in many people finding it more convenient to live in the suburbs where they could enjoy a more relaxed lifestyle, and by providing people with home mortgage tax deductions) has resulted in people from disadvantaged economic backgrounds being left in the cities, which has resulted in increased class and racial segregation. In addition, informal neighbourly interaction is being discouraged, as people living in suburbs, benefit from increased lot sizes (cite).
