Mission Statement

A comprehensive Spring Break trip focusing on service and social action in various communities. Dickinson College alternative spring break is a service-oriented trip to a Native American Reservation called the Tohono O'odham Nation in Pisinimo, Arizona. The goal of alternative spring break is to supply students with an option of community-service and education where a relationship between Dickinson College and the Tohono O'odham Nation will grow.

Events

Fundraising events are held throughout the year to help raise money for the trip. The trip begins the first day of spring break. Students leave Dickinson on Friday or Saturday and fly to Tucson, Arizona. The group returns to Dickinson the following Saturday. Every year there is a growing interest in alternative spring break; if there continues to be widespread interest perhaps another site will be adopted. Student leaders of Alternate Spring Break hope to conduct a Common Hour in late April.

Effectiveness

The alternative spring break trip is charted by Dickinson for basic costs but additional fund-raising is needed. The trip is estimated to cost about $100.00 for each student, but overall the trip will cost between $90,000 to $10,000. ABS successfully puts together a group of enthusiastic students, raises money for the event, and follows through with the trip. During the week in Arizona, volunteer their time helping to fix physical things such as fences and leaks, but they find the interaction with a different culture espesially rewarding.
