When noting that something is indirect statement or indirect question, specify after what. So:

quis esset hic fletus: 'what was the reason for this lamentation', subj. in indirect question after inquireret.

In notes, after the lemma give the literal translation first, then the grammatical information that explains the translation. Literal translation first, then more idiomatic translation. So:

laqueo sibi vitam extorsisse: 'had wrenched life away from him self by means of a noose', i.e. 'had hanged himself' (> extorqueo).

marcescentibus oculis: 'his eyes being (still) weak', 'his eyes still heavy' (White), ablative absolute.

Avoid head notes and try to work in historical, cultural and interpretive points into the notes themselves on particular lemmata.

In literal translations, put in parentheses words that must be inferred.
